Eastbourne Borough 2 Yeading 0
Nationwide South – Saturday 12 August 2006
It was a game of two halves but unfortunately for the Ding the only goals came in the second half by which time the home team were in the ascendency.
Yeading started very brightly, looking much the fitter, passionate and more full of ideas. Up front Marvin Morgan was the star performer, twisting, turning and outsmarting the home defence in almost every move. However, the final finish and luck was just not on Yeading’s side.
Lee Hook in the Borough goal look decidely shaky early on literally keeping the ding at bay by Hook or by Crook. In the opening five minutes he failed to hold Liam Collin’s shot form the edge of the box and somehow flapped it round the post at the second attempt. And then half hour later upended Collins just inside the six yard box, which to add to Yeading’s frustrations not only failed to result in a penalty but saw Collins booked for apparent simulation. In between Marvin Morgan had seen two efforts blocked including one at the end of a mazing run from mid-way inside his own half. Yeading came closest however on thirty-two minute when debutant Richard Goddard rose well looping a header over Hook and onto the top of the Eastbourne bar.
Unfortunately, Yeading’s promising display was limited almost solely to the first half. The hosts did come out brighter and more enthused but Yeaidng appeared to be simply going through the motions. Inside the opening two minutes a quick break right saw Goddard barge Allan Tait off the ball in the box and the assistant referee flagged for foul and a penalty was duly awarded. Scott Ramsay’s spot kick was blasted high and wide of the angle but the home side sensed a result. Delroy Preddie back in the Ding goal was out quick to deny another early Eastbourne break and then on sixty-two minutes Yeading could have settled their nerves and the game. Bradley Quamina picked up a loose ball on the edge of the Borough box and sent in a quick delivery. Morgan appeared to meet it with an almost perfect diving header over Hook but again the woodwork denied.
On seventy-five minutes, Borough broke quickly down their right again through Matt Smart and the ball into Matt Crabb’s feet was perfect for an assured finish low inside the near post. Yeading were noticeably shocked and disorganised as Eastbourne went for the kill. With eight minutes to go Crabb doubled his tally, following a one-two with Ramsay.
